In 2020, China Orient saw its profits experiencing a V-shaped recovery after the sharp year-on-year decline of 25% in the first half year of the year. The Group posted RMB102.18 billion in annual operating revenue, a figure ranking first in the industry, and RMB10,525 million in net profits, up 0.98%.

As of the end of 2020, China Orient gave repayment buffers to or adjusted repayment terms for 526 projects that struggled to make repayment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which involved funds of RMB79 billion, in a move to help related enterprises tide over difficulties and resume production smoothly.

In 2020, China Orient approached local governments and nine large central SOEs. The Company helped CECEP, CNNC and AVIC peel off assets and businesses worth RMB10 billion. It acquired the non-principal business and non-advantageous assets of an enterprise subordinated to SPIC, and set up a special fund worth RMB10 billion with China Reform Holdings and CHN Energy to engage in “de-investing from non-principal/non-core businesses and offering industry bailouts” in the new energy industry. By virtue of the fund, it initially explored a path for central SOEs to realize the separation of principal and supplementary businesses.

As of the end of 2020, China Orient undertook five market-based debt-to-equity swap (DES) projects throughout the year, with a total investment amount of RMB2.81 billion. The steady development of the market-based DES business not only paved the way for the Company to optimize the structure of principal business and the allocation of assets, but also enabled it to play a more active and impactful role in advancing the supply-side structural reform nationwide and supporting the development of real economy.

As of the end of 2020, China Orient completed the institutional cleanup and integration substantially, with the number of holding subsidiaries dropping from 77 to 30 and the number of subsidiary tiers compressed to three, The Company, therefore, ranked first among industry peers in terms of the number of institutions that got integrated. This reform was a panoramic review and a forward-looking exploration since China Orient completed its commercial transition. It also represented a fruitful attempt the Company made to act on the core message delivered at the National Financial Work Conference as well as the requirements set out by the CPC Central Committee, the State Council, and regulators on state-owned financial capital to “focus on principal business and seek professional development”. Thus, it bore great significance for China Orient to achieve strategic transformation and high-quality development.

On December 22, China Orient held the fourth meeting of the Leading Group for Targeted Poverty Alleviation in 2020 to do the following things: thoroughly studying the important instructions made by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang on poverty alleviation during the National Poverty Relief Day, the latest requirements put forth at the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee on poverty alleviation, and the core message from the Standing Committee of the Central Political Bureau of the CPC on the critical battle against poverty; comprehensively summarizing the work done towards poverty alleviation in 2020; pointing out the priorities of poverty relief in 2021; and helping the county receiving its counterpart support transition smoothly from poverty eradication to rural revitalization.

On December 16, China Orient formally established the Data Governance Committee, becoming the first in the industry to do so and offering an effective institutional guarantee for the setup of a data governance framework across the Company.

On December 15, China Orient successfully issued “TECO 2020 Phase I NPA-backed Securities” in the national interbank market with an issue size of RMB900 million, of which the senior tranche raised funds of RMB630 million at a coupon rate of 4.75%. It was the first distressed-asset-backed securitization product launched by the Chinese financial asset management companies since a new round of distressed-asset securitization program was piloted.

On December 11, China Orient issued RMB10 billion worth of perpetual capital bonds in the national interbank market at a coupon rate of 4.89% and with a full subscription multiple of 2.18. As the first of its kind among the Chinese non-banking financial institutions (i.e. financial asset management companies), the bond was subscribed by nearly 50 investors, which consisted of state-owned banks, joint-stock banks, urban commercial banks, rural commercial banks, foreign banks, insurance companies, fund companies, securities companies, etc. Its over-subscription gave full expression to the fact that China Orient’s business strength and brand value was highly recognized by the market.

On December 9, the International Anti-Corruption Day, China Orient held a forum on clean financial culture themed “the New Mission Facing Clean Financial Culture Building and Corporate Supervision & Discipline Enforcement in the new era”. Centered on “Clean Orient”, the core cultural connotation, the forum proposed that “nine interactions” should be advocated in building a clean financial culture in the Company from multiple dimensions of overall corporate development, working relationships, and staff self-discipline, among others. Experts and professors from the Party School of the CPC Central Committee (the National School of Administration) were invited to attend the forum.

On December 4, China Orient signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shanghai Pudong Development Bank Co., Ltd. The two sides decided to explore giving cooperation in the principal business (distressed assets), capital business, and comprehensive financial services, seek in-depth business integration, and build a new pattern of bank-and-enterprise cooperation. They aimed to contribute to the ongoing national drive of economic transformation and development together.

Both parties decided to cement cooperation in the fields of distressed asset management, insurance business, bank-bank cooperation, securities business, and trust business on the principles of equality, good faith, and mutual benefit, with a view to achieving complementary advantages and making strides towards high-quality development.

On November 17, China Orient won the bid for the disposal of a major asset package of PBOC Deposit Insurance Fund Management Co., Ltd., which involved the amount of claims worth over RMB170 billion. On November 13, the “Model Cases of Chinese Enterprises in Targeted Poverty Alleviation (2019)” were released in Beijing. The release conference was hosted by China Social Responsibility 100 Forum under the guidance of the Department of Social Poverty Alleviation of the State Council Poverty Alleviation Office. The poverty reduction model that was pioneered by China Orient to prioritize Party building and industrial development was selected as one of the “Top 50 Integrated Cases of Chinese Enterprises in Integrated Poverty Alleviation (2019)”. On February 29, Shaoyang County in Hunan Province, which received counterpart support from China Orient, officially eliminated poverty, according to the Reply of Hunan Provincial People’s Government on Approving 20 Counties including Shaoyang to Remove the Label of Extreme Poverty (X.ZH.H. [2020] No.17). Since 2010, when Shaoyang County started to receive its counterpart support, China Orient has invested more than RMB50 million to assist the county accumulatively. This issue of financial bonds has a scale of 4 billion yuan, a term of five years and a coupon rate of 3.4%. It’s the first single financial bond used by a financial asset management company for debt-to-equity swap. This bond is the first time to introduce targeted RRR cuts capital for debt-to-equity swap of People's Bank of China. The capital cost has been greatly reduced. On October 16, Dongxing Securities, a subsidiary of China Orient, set up a bail-out fund together with Haidian District, Beijing. Totaling 10 billion yuan, the fund has had its first phase (2 billion yuan) been completely raised, among which 1 billion yuan was subscribed by China Orient. The fund aims to help private technology listed companies resolve stock pledge risks etc. through accepting no more than 10% of the total equities of such listed companies.
